Another week has passed and feeling a bit lonely in my quest of handbag design. I found a brilliant mentor service in London, Fashion Angels http://www.fashion-angel.co.uk.  It was great to go over the concept of my bag and I was given great advice, researching retailers that I would like to stock my bag and then re-designing my bag around their style. I am off this week to meet someone in London who may be able to produce the bag in short runs.

The finished sample arrived in London on Friday. There is one measurement that is not right and I know that I placed this on the dummy sample. It is slightly annoying but on the whole I am really happy . The guys in NY have done me really proud.

It feels very strange that after working on this for so long, that I am still really only at the starting point. Keeping up your enthusiam is really hard. I keep thinking of other possible designs, I need to focus on the goal which was to get this bag on to the market.

I am also going to try and get in contact with buyers and ask their opinion, and then we will go from there.

My main concern is that I will be able to produce my bag at the cost that I want to retail it for.

I am a small business ( tiny ) and I don’t have lots of capital and I have no financial help, so everything I do I pay for directly. I can’t hold masses of stock without an order, I can’t approach buyers without a competitive cost and I can’t get that competitive cost without ordering a massive stock….. catch 22.

Any ideas on how I can’t get out of this vicious circle ?

I have now chosen my leathers and my lining. I have been looking at a lot of bags in the shops the last few weeks ( years ) and I really wanted a textured finish and colours that were rich with an urban feel.

Christina is a production co-ordinator and she is brilliant, completely on the ball.

We have had a chat and she has sent me leather samples. We email everyday and I feel happy that the bag is now progressing. It seems to be going on for ages.

I didn’t realise how many different zips there are on the market to choose from !!

This week I made up a small sample board of ideas for the bag. This is for the NY guys, so that we are all on the same page when it comes to the quality and look that I want to create .

It has been a couple of weeks since I last wrote.

The guys in NY wanted a consultation fee to source my materials ( nothing is free ) ! I understand that no one does anything for nothing but surely we were on on the same page, wanting this bag to go forward in production.

I found a leather supplier in NY, who knew the manufacturer and he was lovely and we began to talk and it seemed he has exactly what I maybe looking for.

So going back to my manufacturer I concluded that if I wanted to make this happen I would have to pay a consultation fee. I do still believe in the guys in NY and I have gone to far to stop.

Luckily the guys are great and they are willing to consult on a half package.

I so want this to work out, this is the furthest i have ever taken an idea and I still need to believe in it. But it is a lonely process.

Ahh!! I’ve come to a bit of a block with going forward !

  1. what complementary material would look good with leather ?
  2. was having this sample made in NY a good idea ?
  3. will this bag take off ?

HELP !!!!!

Its been 3 weeks since I last wrote on the blog and since then I have found another Manufacturing company in NY. They seem to be completely on the ball and are making me a sample … so fingers crossed it turns out good !

I have still left open the possibility of working with the factory in Thailand, and the day that I started to talk to the company in NY, I did finally get another reply from Thailand, which I replied to !  as yet I am still waiting for them to get back to me with info…..

Wishing you all a great 2012

Izzy

I sent my sample bag to a manufacturing company in Thailand, this was a company that I saw at Mipel. Not only did I send the sample but also notes and images. Unfortunately I think I wrote too much information, and it had been partly lost in translation. The first costing that they gave me was too high, remembering that I already have a retail price in mind. So it’s back with them and hopefully I will get a new costing soon….
